Supermarine 4040

The Supermarine 4040 was a proposed vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) fighter aircraft designed by Supermarine in the 1940s. It was never built, but it was an interesting concept that explored the possibilities of VTOL technology.
The concept was proposed in the Supermarine Technical Report No.4040 of 26 February 1944.
The fact that aeroplanes require aerodromes for their operation is often a serious disadvantage, particularly from the military viewpoint. The processes of launching and arresting have been highly developed by the Navy, but are still difficult and hazardous operations, and appear likely to remain so. Machines such as the helicopter and autogyro, which greatly reduce take off and landing problems, are inherently less efficient from the performance point of view and therefore seem unlikely to be military or commercial successes except for a few special purposes.
With a Griffon engine developing 2,500hp the static thrust of the propeller (19 feet diameter 8-bladed contraprop) is 15,000lb. In order to fly horizontally it needs no more than 100sq ft of wing area (compared with the 230sq ft of the Spit- fire), because the wings ae no longer required for landing and also because the large airscrew supplies a considerable amount of lift in level flight.
The normal chassis is eliminated- the machine lands, and stands, on its tail. The resultant saving in structure weight compensates for the increase in airscrew weight, and also for the weight of the two speed airscrew.

We have deliberately chosen the FDM process to produce our models. For optimal results, the models are printed at high resolution with custom developed print profiles. This enables us to use bio- degradable materials with minimal waste and no involvement of toxic chemicals. A certain surface roughness is however inevitable. If desired, light sanding will help to improve surface finish.

For gluing, cyanoacrylate glue works well (not included).
